An avid reader, writer, and painter, Douglas has become interested in combining different artistic media together. As a writer, he has been published by Continuum Publishing, and commissioned by theatres and universities as a lyricist and poet. His credits as a visual artist include illustrating for Lantern Books and Continuum Publishing, as well as commissions from institutions including the University of Baltimore.
Douglas has particularly enjoyed wedding his texts and visual art to his compositions, which has been a rewarding experience both for composer and audience alike. Recent commissions of and awards for such intercontextual works include Colonnades, for piano solo (The Presser Award, 2009); Sonata for ‘cello and piano (The University of Tulsa, commissioning, 2008); and the Idea of a Whale, for piano and voice (The University of Baltimore, commissioning). Texts, recordings, and images for Sonata and the Idea of a Whale may be found below; also, please feel free to read more about Douglas’ upcoming tour of Colonnades.
